Photo Series of a Young Girl Dressed Up as Great Women Throughout History

Photographer Jaime Moore‘s daughter Emma recently turned 5 years old. Naturally, being a photographer, Moore wanted to commemorate the event for her daughter by putting together a cute photo shoot for her, so she turned to the Internet for inspiration.

Much to her chagrin, however, something like 95 percent of the ideas she ran into were actually the same idea: how to dress up your 5-year-old as a Disney Princess. Moore wasn’t keen on that, so she went another way. Instead of dressing her daughter up as a made up ideal, an “unrealistic fantasy” as she put it, she chose to dress and pose her daughter as some of the greatest women throughout history.

The point was to convey to little Emma that she could be anything she wants to be. As Moore explains it on her blog:

My daughter wasn’t born into royalty, but she was born into a country where she can now vote, become a doctor, a pilot, an astronaut, or even President if she wants and that’s what REALLY matters.

Each photo is also captioned with an inspirational quote by the amazing woman it portrays. To see all of them in higher resolution and read more about Moore’s inspiration for the project, head over to her website by clicking here.

TW: suicide, outing

A couple of days ago, a woman game developer attempted suicide on a live video stream following internet harassment related to an Indiegogo campaign for her game. While she lay in the hospital, Destructoid writer Allistair Pinsof, in the interest of clarifying her Indiegogo “scam,” outed her as a transgender woman on his Twitter account.

[…]
  1.

Destructoid announced today that they’re docking Pinsof’s pay and putting him on a temporary leave of absence. But not firing him. I couldn’t help but remember when, less than a year ago, Destructoid writer Ryan Perez was fired for comparing you to a “booth babe.”

[…]

Pinsof put this woman’s life in danger in a real way - as she (according to his tweets) lay in a hospital bed following a suicide attempt. He still has a job. The man who called you a booth babe lost his.

“Uhura never had another name during the series. One of the fan writers wrote “Upenda” – which means “peace” in Swahili, I understand – not officially, but in some of their fan writings. And it sort of took hold. But when they were going to do the official history of Star Trek in a published book, the writer called Gene and asked him was “Uhura” her first name or her last name? Gene said, “Well, Nichelle and I never decided.” We always leaned towards it being her last name because it’s taken from the Swahili “uhuru” which means freedom. So it would sort of be like the same as “Freeman.” So he said, “You can make it her last name.” The writer said, “What about her first name? I’ve come up with one in Swahili. It’s Nyota.” Gene said, “I can’t give you that permission because Nichelle and I named her together, and she has rights to that, so you’ll have to call her and get her permission.” So he gave him my number, and he called me and I laughed and was delighted. He said, “I have a name and it’s Nyota.” I said, “That’s quite beautiful. What does it mean?” He said, “It means ‘star’.” I said, “You can have my permission!” So I have since said that her name is Nyota Upenda Uhura, which would mean a free-floating star: “star of freedom and peace”. I like that.”— NICHELLE NICHOLS

a friend came round to help me revise and forgot to log out of her facebook on my laptop so I’ve spent the last 20 minutes devoting her facebook to trains.

I’ve also got the middle name “ILikeTrains” pending and have joined 50 “I love trains” groups.
